MSF Award Ceremony for Foster Children and Youth 2022 (Audrie)

It’s MSF Award Ceremony for Foster Children and Youth 2022! We are so happy to see that 3 HFG foster children got the MSF academic excellence awards from Minister for Social and Family Development, Mr Masagos Zulkifli!
Today, we want to celebrate these children and wanted to find out their dreams!
We were onsite and managed to collect some short snippets.

MICHAEL, IRENE and NICOLE* (14 year-old foster girl).

Nicole, got an award for her Sec 2 results. Michael and Irene shared that they felt so happy for Nicole because they saw her putting in a lot of effort. With the transition from primary school to Secondary school, Nicole had to juggle between her CCA, her studies, moving between the homes of her natural family and foster family. She rose above it all to focus and do well in her studies.

Nicole was happy that she got an award as she didn’t expect to get it. She shared that her dream was to be a teacher when she grows up, one who is patient and will put in a lot of effort to help the students. She also hopes to travel to many countries when she can finally support herself.
Michael and Irene said “We are proud of to be in this journey with her”.

CHUNE KEAT, AUDRIE and VALERIE* (12 year-old foster girl)
When Valerie first came to Chune Keat and Audrie’s home, she told Audrie she did not want to study as she didn’t think there was much of a future for her. Chune Keat and Audrie were saddened by the hurt and hopelessness in her heart. Over time, Valerie’s heart healed, she found hope and believed she could build a good life for herself. She rose from failing all her subjects except English to getting into the Express stream for her PSLE and was even the Top Student of her school’s mixed stream.
Valerie shared that she was “thrilled to receive this award and would like to thank her foster parents who have been nothing but patient”. Her dream is to “study in an overseas university and plan to work hard during secondary school” to make it.

Chune Keat and Audrie has been inspired by her journey and says, “It has just been so amazing to see Valerie heal and grow! We are so proud of her because we know what she had to overcome to be here!”

MATT, EMMALINE and *ETHAN (12 year-old foster boy)

Ethan is a friendly and easy-going boy. Matt and Emmaline helped Ethan to learn a new routine so that he can have the structure to grow and focus for his PSLE. Ethan is a boy of few words but his grin told it all. He said that he was happy and proud to receive an award and he worked hard and persevered even he wanted to give up. His dream is to be a pilot one day.

Matt and Emmaline shared that it was not easy for Ethan to adjust to a new routine but “we are proud that he came to realise that it was for his own good and stuck to it!”
We were also very happy to meet up with partners such as MSF Children in Care Services, Boys' Town Singapore, Epworth Foster Care, Gracehaven Fostering and members of the Committee of Fostering! You guys make fostering possible!
And we wish to thank MSF Children in Care Services and fostering agencies for organizing this. This means a lot to our foster children. For many of them, this can even change the way they see themselves!
*Names of children have been changed to protect their identities.
