Fostering Tea Session (Annie)

Image
From a joint tea session organized by HFG and Boys' Town Fostering Services  on  13th November 2021 Annie came from Hong Kong and she used to volunteer with children with autism in dormitories back in Hong Kong. She spent six hours to play with these children and had to leave after her volunteering work ended. This left her a desire to do more in-depth work as she realized the impact she had on them was limited as she had to leave shortly after the children became familiar with her and started to bond with her. When she was based in Singapore, she felt that God gave her a desire to help children. God spoke to her in a loud voice one morning “there is a girl that I want you to take care”. Annie knew intuitively that God was asking her to care for a foster child. She shared the idea with her husband and her husband voiced his concerns of the foster child not getting along well with their own child. Annie prayed to God to soften her husband’s heart. A few months later, she broach...

Fostering Tea Session (Audrie & Chune Keat)

Image
16 Oct 2021 - HFG intro tea, in partnership with The Salvation Army Singapore . HFG foster parents Audrie Siew and Khor Chune Keat shared about their journey in fostering and how they saw how God used their family as a channel of healing and restoration. <Audrie and Chune Keat’s sharing> Audrie and Chune Keat shared that their family was a normal and imperfect one with teens. Audrie first had a calling to help vulnerable children. She worked in the out of home care area, before finally starting the foster when she went for her further studies. Her family had already heard a lot about fostering so they were open. Audrie shared that the current theme of fostering for them was “Healing and Restoration”. Through fostering, her family had over time learnt to become the “green pasture” and “still water” where the children could be restored. She shared how foster children often had traumatic histories. When her foster children, Jodie and Vicki (not their real names) arrived, the...

Fostering Tea Session (Kuan Ying and Colin) - The Unexpected Journey

Image
Sharing at the Sept 2021 intro tea with Boys' Town Fostering Services . Kuan Ying and Colin likened their journey to “The Unexpected Journey” of The Hobbit! AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY Colin and Kuan Ying are ex-civil servants. They have two adult children. Kuan Ying once attended an MSF Volunteer Event. She was very moved to see a teenager in a wheelchair on stage thanking his foster parents wholeheartedly for looking after him since he was a little child. That helped her see the immense impact of fostering on vulnerable children and seeded a desire in her to foster children with special needs. Amazingly, her children were supportive about it. Colin, her husband, without hesitation readily agreed. As part of MSF’s application process to become foster parents, they had to go through a gruelling interview with the assessors. The whole process was completed within 3 months. Training followed soon after to equip them for fostering children. Their first placement was supposed to have been a...

Sharing To Help Those Considering Fostering (Kian Yong)

Image
"This is our 5th year into fostering and we are currently fostering our 4th foster son. Yesterday, our 3rd foster son visited us. We also have a boy whom we are helping with respite care for a few days. We did respite care for him last year too. Good to see that he is doing well. . (HFG's response: haha no time or money). They have several WhatsApp chatgroups that provide support for foster parents and those interested in fostering. I have benefitted much from the chatgroup. It took me sometime to consider if I should upload this posting, but I thought it may help those who may be considering taking up fostering. Our fostering journey has seen many ups and downs - physically, mentally and emotionally. Our first 2 fostering did not go well and broke down prematurely. It was a terrible feeling. We tried our best to provide care for them but it didn’t turn out as we had planned. Sometime I even questioned God why such things have to happen. We received a lot of support from MSF...

Fostering Tea Session (Kai Mei)

Image
Sharing by Kai Mei at the joint intro tea session with Epworth Community Services on 31 July 2021. Kai Mei has four children of her own and came to know about fostering through FamChamps, which is organised by Focus on the Family Singapore. During one of the sessions, she heard a foster mother and her son shared about fostering. At that point of time, the concept of fostering was foreign yet something happened in her heart. Her family started to explore if this was something that God wanted them to do. It didn’t stop at that talk. One of her friends was a foster mother and linked her up to attend this same tea session organised by Epworth some time ago. After that tea session, God laid upon their hearts to seriously consider fostering. How Jeannie (not her real name) came to join her family was truly by God's grace! When Epworth called Kai Mei for the first time to take in Jeannie, their family was worried as they mentioned she would cry for a few hours. However, they decided to ...

Fostering Intro Session (Ps Too & Joyce)

Image
From fostering intro session with The Salvation Army Singapore  on 26 June 2021. Ps Too & Joyce have been foster parents for over 7 yrs & hv fostered 5 kids. They r currently fostering 3 kids & hv 3 grown up children of their own. When their first foster child was 3 years old, they decided to take on a 9 year old foster child with special needs from a Children’s home nicknamed Cinderella. Ps Too & Joyce shared that 2 yrs after taking care of Cinderella without too much trouble, she went home for extended home leave for 5 days with her natural family for the first time. She came back a very different girl. She started behaving aggressively, was easily triggered, had nightmares and would scream and tantrum. She also started acting violent towards herself and the family. Her behaviour became so erratic that the family struggled to cope. They even had the police show up because of all her constant screaming. Thankfully, MSF arranged for Cinderella to have bi-week...

Fostering Tea Session (Land & Joyce)

Image
Sharing at fostering intro session, in partnership with Boys' Town, on 29 May 2021. Joyce and Land decided to foster despite juggling with their busy schedules as full-time IT project managers and as parents to their only son. The couple first heard about fostering from an employee from the Ministry of Social and Family Development in 2014 and were shocked to find out about the unfortunate experiences that children face in an affluent country like Singapore. They were initially apprehensive as both of them were working full-time and had very busy schedules. The couple pondered for a while and thought “if we can make a difference with just 1 child, it would be good enough” . With that thought of making a difference with one child at a time, Joyce and Land opted to only take 1 child. Howe ver, when a second child was placed with them through an emergency placement, they decided to take her in. One thing led to another, and they are now fostering 3 children (2 males aged 12 and 11 yea...
