Fostering Tea Session (Kuan Ying and Colin) - The Unexpected Journey

Image
Sharing at the Sept 2021 intro tea with Boys' Town Fostering Services . Kuan Ying and Colin likened their journey to “The Unexpected Journey” of The Hobbit! AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY Colin and Kuan Ying are ex-civil servants. They have two adult children. Kuan Ying once attended an MSF Volunteer Event. She was very moved to see a teenager in a wheelchair on stage thanking his foster parents wholeheartedly for looking after him since he was a little child. That helped her see the immense impact of fostering on vulnerable children and seeded a desire in her to foster children with special needs. Amazingly, her children were supportive about it. Colin, her husband, without hesitation readily agreed. As part of MSF’s application process to become foster parents, they had to go through a gruelling interview with the assessors. The whole process was completed within 3 months. Training followed soon after to equip them for fostering children. Their first placement was supposed to have been a...

Fostering Tea Session (Kai Mei)

Image
Sharing by Kai Mei at the joint intro tea session with Epworth Community Services on 31 July 2021. Kai Mei has four children of her own and came to know about fostering through FamChamps, which is organised by Focus on the Family Singapore. During one of the sessions, she heard a foster mother and her son shared about fostering. At that point of time, the concept of fostering was foreign yet something happened in her heart. Her family started to explore if this was something that God wanted them to do. It didn’t stop at that talk. One of her friends was a foster mother and linked her up to attend this same tea session organised by Epworth some time ago. After that tea session, God laid upon their hearts to seriously consider fostering. How Jeannie (not her real name) came to join her family was truly by God's grace! When Epworth called Kai Mei for the first time to take in Jeannie, their family was worried as they mentioned she would cry for a few hours. However, they decided to ...

Fostering Tea Session (Fabian & Bee Cheng)

Image
Sharing by Fabian & Bee Cheng at the joint fostering tea session with Boys' Town on 21 Nov 2020 (online). It was not an easy decision for Fabian and Bee Cheng to commit to apply to be foster parents. There were worries that they would be unable to cope with the addition of a foster child. Fabian first mooted the idea of fostering to Bee Cheng as he wanted to make a difference in a social cause with a great need. God has placed a burden in his heart for abused children for many years – he would feel a tinkling in his heart whenever he read news articles on abused children. After serving in the Sound Crew Ministry in Church for 7 years, he felt ready to explore serving in another area. Bee Cheng was serving in another ministry in Church and was already occupied in other work. She had her own reservations on how the family would adapt to having a foster child in the household. Not knowing the background nor the temperament of the foster child further added to her concerns. When F...

Fostering Tea Session (Alan & Liz)

Image
On 17 Nov 2018, Alan & Eliz shared about their journey fostering a 6 month old baby who is now an energetic 2 yr 8 mth old. What made this placement special was that it made this couple both first-time foster parents and first-time parents as well, since they had no children of their own. Not only did they have to cope with caring for a baby for the first time, they also had to manage the medical issues that came with this child being a premature baby. Nonetheless, the couple shared that the first time they met their foster child, it felt right that they should care for this child. He was warmly welcomed by their extended family, including Elizabeth’s mother. In God’s perfect timing and provision, her mother had just asked Elizabeth for a new babysitting job, totally unaware that the couple has just decided to start fostering . Her mother now cares for the child when Elizabeth is at work. Despite the love they have for the child, Elizabeth and Alan are prepared for the possible eve...

Fostering Tea Session (Hope & David, Joyce & Land)

Image
17 Dec 2016 - Heartfelt sharing by Hope & David, and by Joyce & Land. Hope and David's prayer is that, by obeying the call in James 1:27, they can play a part in restoring a child's belief in "family" . They shared the joys and challenges of fostering their first foster child (a teenager with special needs), and how it brought out the nurturing side of their own young daughters . In the short time their foster child was with them, they were able to help her open up a lot more about what she had gone through. Joyce and Land are not Singaporeans but they stepped forward to foster to serve when they heard about children in Singapore who needed out-of-home care. Currently fostering a boy plus providing respite care for another boy, they shared how fostering revealed their own flaws and weakness e.g impatience etc, but it pushed them to grow and to rely on God even more.
