Sharing To Help Those Considering Fostering (Kian Yong)

Image
"This is our 5th year into fostering and we are currently fostering our 4th foster son. Yesterday, our 3rd foster son visited us. We also have a boy whom we are helping with respite care for a few days. We did respite care for him last year too. Good to see that he is doing well. . (HFG's response: haha no time or money). They have several WhatsApp chatgroups that provide support for foster parents and those interested in fostering. I have benefitted much from the chatgroup. It took me sometime to consider if I should upload this posting, but I thought it may help those who may be considering taking up fostering. Our fostering journey has seen many ups and downs - physically, mentally and emotionally. Our first 2 fostering did not go well and broke down prematurely. It was a terrible feeling. We tried our best to provide care for them but it didn’t turn out as we had planned. Sometime I even questioned God why such things have to happen. We received a lot of support from MSF...

Fostering Tea Session (Edwin Lee)

Image
Joint fostering tea session with  Epworth Community Services / Epworth Foster Care  on 27 April 2019. So blessed by having a foster father (for a change) share at our fostering tea on sat!! Edwin Lee started by sharing his Philosophy of Life which led to his wife and him fostering. 1) If God gives you a glimpse of something that might be on His Heart, check it out! 2) Live for the audience of ONE 3) Get your investment Time Horizon right. He cited Francis Chan's rope illustration that our life on earth is just a tiny fraction of eternal life. As such, we should prioritize working on what really matters for eternity. Some years ago, a song his 2 kids used to listen to kept playing in his head. Called "Two Shirts", it comprised verses from Luke 3:11, Mark 9:35 & Matt 6:19-21 (if we have 2 shirts, we should give one away to the person with none) sung to a simple melody. This song gave him pause to consider if he was really making use of what he had been given. With ...

Fostering Tea Session (Joseph Gan)

Image
23 Nov 2018 - First ever CBD fostering intro lunch in collaboration with Epworth Community Services for Foster Care Week! Joseph Gan, our HFG foster parent is also a co-founder and president of a cyber-security startup. We are excited to have a foster father sharing as they play such an important role. We have been amazed by the transformation of their foster child, Jason (not his real name)! Foster parents come from all walks of life and Joseph's sharing also shows how busy professionals can also step up to foster ! Joseph and Li Ping, his wife, started fostering 3 years ago. They have seen personally what research also showed - that children really do grow better in foster families than children’s homes ! Fostering allows vulnerable children to grow in many ways through having closer and more secure relationships in family settings . They saw Jason bloom over time. Jason came as very fearful 9yo boy. They patiently took a step by step approach in caring for him with realist...

Fostering Tea Session (Hope)

Image
Fostering Tea Session on 29 Sept 2018 HFG foster parent, Hope, shared how she was convicted by James 1:27 . She had been helping to run a monthly children’s programme for orphans. She and her husband David began to pray for God's leading for something they would do together. They attended a Focus on the Family Singapore screening of the Dropbox and talk on fostering. This time David felt a strong conviction and they began to explore the possibility of fostering. They understood that they needed to talk to their whole household because this must be a family decision, a commitment needing everyone’s buy-in . When they began, Hope was homeschooling both of her two daughters, now 13 and 10. David travels 50% of the time which would mean Hope would be the primary caregiver. She also had her longtime helper attend fostering training, which also helped them all understand trauma better and how it affects these children in various ways . There were challenges as they took on their firs...

Fostering Tea Session (Teh Hsin & Joyce) - Like a Hurricane Survivor, Keep Plugging on

Image
16 July 2016 -  Wonderful sharing by Teh Hsin & Joyce to potential foster carers. Through their care and prayers, their 3-yr-old foster child "Dora" who was at risk for reactive attachment disorder & global developmental delay as a baby, has now blossomed into a confident, bubbly and loving child. While they dread the day she leaves to be reunified with her own parents, they know that loving her AND wanting the best for her means letting go of their own desires AND being willing to get hurt in the process....But it's worth it for the sake of the child!!! Having met a displaced survivor of Hurricane Katrina recently, Joyce reflected that the trauma a foster child experiences at being suddenly removed from her birth family and brought into care is just as devastating - it's like a hurricane blowing through her home, leaving nothing in its wake & removing her from everything she knows. How lost and bewildering that can be !!!! And similar to being swept away...

Sharing by Dr Krish Kandiah (Founder of Home For Good UK)

Image
11 Nov 2014 - We are so blessed to have Dr Krish Kandiah, President of London School of Theology and Founder Director of Home For Good UK, with us this afternoon. His sharing on fostering and adoption greatly stirred and moved our hearts. Many children who are in need are waiting for us to respond. We shouldn't keep them waiting any longer. Let's awake to the Father's call to take care of the orphans. 8 Feb 2015 - Dr Krish shares how being Father of the fatherless is central to God's character and encourages foster carers to press on in what they do as their act of worship unto Him. 12 Oct 2015 - Home for Good Singapore is pleased to have been ministered to by Krish Kandiah from Home for Good UK. Home for Good Singapore is modelled after Home for Good UK, a charity helping to find adoptive and foster homes for children in the care system. The HFG SG foster parents had a great time fellowshipping over a wonderful dinner whipped up by Khye Suan from Methodist Childr...

Fostering Tea Session (Cindy & Timmy)

Image
30 May 2015 -  Cindy and Timmy Ng's sharing about the joys and challenges of fostering! As a social worker, Cindy sees many children in need of care, and felt God's call to " walk the talk " in providing that care. In managing the challenging behaviors of her foster kids, she found that constant communication with Timmy helped, as did personal reflection; adjustment of her expectations about kids' behaviours; and the prayers and support of church friends and colleague s. Cindy felt that her previous foster son's unusually strong attachment to Timmy (despite her doing most of the caregiving) reflected a deep need to bond with a father figure. Such is the importance of foster fathers in the lives of these kids who are often fatherless! Timmy shared that it is much easier to help someone, and then retreat into the sanctuary of our own families, compared with allowing that person into our homes and lives. Yet, when we are stretched beyond our comfort zone, that...
