Panel Sharing at Epworth Foster Care's Movie Event (Vivienne, Audrie & Chune Keat)

29 Oct 2022 - HFG partnered Epworth Foster Care for the ”Drop Box” movie event. The show was touching and a great reminder of how the life of every child is precious in God’s eyes. Epworth’s manager of fostering, Li Koon and HFG foster parent, Kuan Ying, welcomed everyone!

HFG foster parents, Vivienne Ng and Audrie Siew/Chune Keat were on the panel together with Epworth’s Manager of fostering, Li Koon.
Representing HFG, Vivienne shared how the Lord broke her heart with His love for vulnerable children that she saw through her work and led her to foster. She highlighted that research showed that a child can be on a positive path if there was just one stable and caring adult who believed in them!
Audrie shared how her foster girl, Ellie (not her real name) came just 2 weeks before her final P2 exams, not knowing how to read even simple words like “CAT” or say A-Zs. It was heartbreaking when Ellie shared how she had never passed a single test or spelling before. Audrie could see how she felt shame and hopelessness. Chune Keat, a “regular IT dude”, and her family took turns to help her read. Over a few months, Ellie improved by leaps and bounds and even passed all her exams for the 1st time in her life!
Responding to questions on how they would feel when the foster child returns home, Vivienne shared that many things foster parents have done for them, such as seeing what a caring family is like, will always remain with the foster child. Audrie said that many natural families, from her experience, actually do still love their children. She shared how she sometimes links up her friends and contacts to continue helping her foster children when they return home so they will always have another auntie or uncle to turn to.
As a conclusion, Vivienne advised that fostering is something possible as the Lord enables! Audrie said that it doesn’t take a super duper family to foster. What is needed is a caring and healthy family, a flexible and welcoming mindset. She highlighted that fostering truly changes lives and shared how another foster child of hers, Lilac, was in a dark phase and, once told her, “Auntie, I don’t have to study because I don’t plan to be alive by 12 years old”. Now, a year later, Vickie has bloomed and is looking forward to Sec school. She is cheerful, bubbly, has a great sense of humour and even loves cosplay!
