My Foster Son Learning the Meaning of "Sad" (Vivienne Ng)

Image
Our foster son C only learnt the meaning of "sad" at 4 yrs 10 mths (this April). Sure, he had learnt the word cos we had explained it to him in books; he could demonstrate a sad face; & he definitely would have had experienced sad feelings... But somehow he just never put two and two together. C is blessed with a sunny, cheerful and engaging disposition (those of u who have met him would agree), hardly ever crying or showing any low mood in the 1.5 years with us. However, he is often disruptive at school and aggressive with friends, with his behavior escalating since last November. Previously, whenever I asked C if he misbehaved cos he was angry or sad, he would readily agree with me with a deadpan expression on his face. Soon, he started using "feeling sad or angry" as an excuse every time he hurt others, to the extent that I even wondered to my colleagues if he had "callous emotional traits". In April, a week before it finally clicked for him, C crie...

Fostering Tea Session (Teh Hsin & Joyce) - Like a Hurricane Survivor, Keep Plugging on

Image
16 July 2016 -  Wonderful sharing by Teh Hsin & Joyce to potential foster carers. Through their care and prayers, their 3-yr-old foster child "Dora" who was at risk for reactive attachment disorder & global developmental delay as a baby, has now blossomed into a confident, bubbly and loving child. While they dread the day she leaves to be reunified with her own parents, they know that loving her AND wanting the best for her means letting go of their own desires AND being willing to get hurt in the process....But it's worth it for the sake of the child!!! Having met a displaced survivor of Hurricane Katrina recently, Joyce reflected that the trauma a foster child experiences at being suddenly removed from her birth family and brought into care is just as devastating - it's like a hurricane blowing through her home, leaving nothing in its wake & removing her from everything she knows. How lost and bewildering that can be !!!! And similar to being swept away...

Fostering Tea Session (Hwee Ling)

Image
30 April 2016 -  Hwee Ling first fostered with Sanctuary House and then with MSF. Hwee Ling shared how God burdened and led her and her husband to care for vulnerable children. She also shared how they were initially concerned about whether they could show love to a child that is not their own , and whether they would wind up compromising on the commitment and time for their own biological children . They soon found their concerns unfounded. They, including their children, grew to love their foster child. Some of the participants asked about the challenges of fostering and how they were overcome. The foster parents present unilaterally attributed the source of their strength to God. They also encouraged potential applicants to trust the Lord to provide for whatever they need in order to participate in this ministry.

There Goes The Fear (Dr Viv Thomas, OM International)

Image
22 March 2016 - HFG-SG is privileged to have Dr Viv Thomas, Associate Director of OM International share with all of us.  Dr Viv shared deeply about his personal experience growing up in a troubled family. He shared how God redeemed him and how his foster parents showed him what it means to be cherished and loved. Dr Viv almost teared up when he related to us his foster parents' offer of two eggs and chips for dinner, during his time of need. He encourages the foster parents to press on with the little tiny things during the placement. The two eggs and chips are symbolic of the love and attention he received during his stay. Dr Viv reminded everyone that his foster parents were ordinary people, far from perfect . In spite of their imperfection, they opened their hearts and home to him. Till this day, Dr Viv keeps in touch with them and count them as important figures in his life. Dr Viv reminded us not to foster because it is a good thing to do. But to foster because it is consist...

Sharing by Alexandra Jagelman

Image
12 March 2016 - Sharing by Alexandra Jagelman who has lived in Southwest China since 1998, started a home for abandoned children with disabilities, and ministers to children who have been abused. 1. God can do great things - Thru' broken vessels like us, His love is poured out into these most broken of vessels (children in need of protection or care) 2. The importance of reclaiming the lives of these children thru our prayers and proclaiming God's blessings on them constantly and intentionally. 3. There is no need to force a foster child to be emotionally close to us; we just need be present with them, and wait for them to approach . 4. Don't just be busy providing for the physical needs of our foster child but remember to be a mother to the child even if it means your heart will be broken when they leave . 5. It's all about perspective - She once took in 2 special needs babies at a go and found it very hard to cope with the incessant crying. However, when one baby...

Letter from a Singaporean Foster Grandparent

Image
Vivienne Ng's FB Post on 19 Feb 2016: Yesterday, we posted a letter TO foster grandparents. Here is a letter FROM a Singaporean foster grandparent (my father), written back in Sept 2014. My father had written this email to his fellow Board Directors at the International Christian Mission (ICM) where he serves, in response to my heartfelt plea (made in a pool of tears) which I had posted on the FB page of a major church denomination. "Hi Brethren While lying in a hospital bed at three this morning, I was reading our elder daughter Vivienne's open letter to the Christian community in Singapore, about fostering of children by Christian families. As I read it, my heart also ached. And I felt led to forward her letter to you all in the hope and prayer that you might want to encourage your children as well as your church members to consider fostering some children. Most of us ICM directors are grandparents, and as such, it is 'natural' for us to dote on our grandchildren...

World Without Orphans (2016)

Image
Hi from us at the World Without Orphans Forum!! Picture with Krish Kandiah (Home for Good in the UK). It's been amazing to meet like-minded people to whom God has given the same "foolish" dream of a world without orphans. May God awaken the local church in Singapore with the same vision.

Fostering Tea Session (Desmond, Wendy & Cindy)

Image
23 January 2016 - We had our first Introduction to Fostering Tea session of the year. Foster parents Desmond, Wendy and Cindy shared how they decided to foster and what kept them going. Wendy and Cindy shared about the personal and spiritual growth they have experienced in their journey, and how God has sustained them during times of difficulties and self doubt. Desmond shared powerfully from Micah 6, reminding us of our identity in Christ, and how that determines our responsibilities in life.

Fostering Tea Session (Ai Cheng & Vivienne)

Image
5 Dec 2015 - Our final tea session for 2015. Foster parents Ai Cheng and Vivienne share from their hearts about the reasons for their decision to foster and the challenges they had to go through when persevering in their fostering journey. What was really significant for us this tea session was a mother who had brought her 12 year old to the tea session because she believes that " fostering is a family decision ". How true!
